Learning About Major Linux Distributions
It's quite useful to know which Linux distributions are the "major", commonly used, and popular Linux distros. This helps you to understand what's going on in the Linux marketplace - and IT job marketplace!
For example, Red Hat Linux is an extremely expensive Linux distribution, but it's also

Many "minor" Linux distributions have been created from the very few "major" Linux distributions.
In other words, there are several "minor" Linux distributions that are "based on" and "derived from" (and created with a "foundation on") a single "major" Linux distribution.
For example, the minor Linux distributions named DEF, GHI and many others are "based on" the major Linux distribution named ABC.
In the example above, replace ABC with any single major Linux distribution name - and replace DEF and GHI with the minor Linux distribution names that have been "derived from" or "based on" the Linux distribution named ABC. You'll see examples of this with "real" of Linux distro names shortly.
And although all of the GNU Linux commands are virtually identical from one Linux distribution to another, the way to run Linux commands as the main System Administrator

Although Distrowatch statistics may be "questionable" (as even the maintainer of Distrowatch has said), it's worth noting the popularity of the "major" Linux distributions over the last several years.
Distrowatch statistics for the last several years as a summarized from Linux distro info at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DistroWatch
According to Distrowatch, Mandriva Linux (formerly Mandrake Linux) was #1 for 2002, 2003 and 2004. And Ubuntu Linux was # 1 for 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008!
Also, Mandrake Linux (now called Mandriva Linux), was # 1 for

Many (many) Linux distributions come and go over time and some of the Linux distributions mentioned in this Linux commands training book may no longer be "active" (as in, still being developed and distributed) and still other new Linux distributions will be created over time.
However, many of the Linux distributions that are no longer "active" are still in use today!
And you may end up working with some of them, such as when you work on

Many people are extremely loyal to a Linux distribution for the "right reasons".
They understand and appreciate the differences between the common Linux distribution software components that are available in all Linux distributions - and the Linux distribution characteristics that
More on Linux Distributions Training - What DOES Make A Linux Distribution Unique?
Some people become overly loyal to a specific Linux distribution, when the thing(s) they like the most about the Linux distribution can be found in ANY and ALL Linux distributions.
People often work with a Linux distribution for a while and become comfortable with using it, and this causes them to think that "their" Linux distribution is the best - without trying any or many other Linux distributions!
Some Linux distributions, and especially some of the
More on Linux Distributions - Branding Confusion - And What DOESN'T Make A Linux Distribution Unique
People develop Linux "distribution loyalty" and Linux "distribution brand preference" for many reasons, but some people confuse the Linux distribution name with the Linux distribution software components that they have used and have grown to like.
Here's What Happens with Linux Distribution Names, Branding and Loyalty
People that learn Linux distribution ABC will often think that this is the best Linux distribution, simply because this is the Linux distro that
More on Linux Distribution Names, Linux Distribution Branding - And Linux Distribution Loyalty
There are lots of people that confuse the Linux distribution software components, such as the Linux OS kernel, the GNU Linux commands, the many different Linux server programs, the Linux desktops and the Linux software programs - with the name of a specific (and very carefully and expensively branded) Linux distribution name.
And almost all of the Linux distribution software components have NOTHING to do with the Linux distribution (name) that is "distributing" the Linux software components they contain!
Linux Commands Training Tips: This Linux training book will be as "vendor neutral" as possible, and describe the GNU Linux OS, without confusing a Linux distribution name with the Linux distribution software components!
For example, at times you will see ABC, DEF and GHI used for Linux distribution names, rather than real Linux distribution names. You can usually replace ABC, DEF and GHI with any one of the over 130 Linux distribution names.
Don't Confuse Linux Distribution Software with a Linux Distribution Name
It's true that a few Linux software components in a Linux distribution may have been created by a Linux distribution (name). The percentage of any given Linux distribution software that has been created by a specific Linux distribution (name) is incredibly small in comparison to
