Benefits of Learning About Popular Linux Distributions - Linux Distribution Training

Learning About Major Linux Distributions

It's quite useful to know which Linux distributions are the "major", commonly used, and popular Linux distros. This helps you to understand what's going on in the Linux marketplace - and IT job marketplace!

For example, Red Hat Linux is an extremely expensive Linux distribution, but it's also

very popular.

On the other hand, Fedora Linux is free (and "bleeding edge" and the "test bed" for software features that will be added to future versions of Red Hat Linux).

So, if you're trying to get a job at a company that uses Red Hat Linux, just get Fedora Linux and use it so that you can get Red Hat Linux experience, because these two Linux distros are virtually identical. (The person interviewing you for the job may not understand that the GNU Linux commands, that are common to all Linux distributions, are the best method of Linux System Administration and may think Red Hat Linux is "special" for some reason).

Linux Commands Training Tips: You can easily download Fedora Linux as a Linux ISO file, burn it to a CD and run it as a "live" version without installing it. For any Linux "live" version, you just boot your system with it and the entire Linux OS starts and runs on your system - without having to be installed!

More on Linux "live" versions in an upcoming section.

Learning About Minor Linux Distributions

It's also useful to know the "major" Linux distros, as these are the Linux distributions that have been used to create many other "minor" Linux distributions.

For example, if you already know how to use Debian Linux (a major Linux distro), then you have a really good idea how to use Knoppix (a minor Linux distro that was derived from Debian!).
