A Linux "Terminal" (as Opposed to a Linux "Terminal Emulation Window")

A "terminal" (a.k.a. virtual terminal, vt) is a full black screen with white lettering. When you're working at a terminal, you don't see any part of the Linux desktop. The desktop does not appear in the background. The entire screen is black and the command line prompt (at which you type in Linux commands) appears in white. The desktop is still up and running, but it doesn't appear on the screen.
