Debian Linux - A "Major" Linux Distribution - And Distros "Based On" / "Derived From" Debian Linux
Debian Linux and Linux Distributions "Based On" or "Derived From" the Debian Linux Distribution
Debian Linux is known for strict adherence to the Unix and Free Open Source Software (FOSS) philosophies.
Debian Linux is "independant" and not backed by a company or organization.
Debian Linux was founded in 1993 and is governed by the Debian Constitution and Social Contract which states that the goal of the Debian project is
the development of a free OS (operating system) and also to ensure that Debian always remains 100% free (in every sense of the word - free as in free beer and free as in freedom).
The Debian Linux distro is constantly under development by 1,000+ volunteers all over the world.
Debian Linux is supported by donations through SPI, a non-profit organization which was founded to help organizations develop and distribute open hardware and software for various free software projects.
Here's what the Debian Linux web site at http://www.debian.org has to say about Debian Linux:
"What is Debian? Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux."
Here are some of the Linux distributions that are "Based On" and "Derived From" the Debian Linux Distribution:
Ubuntu, Damn Small Linux, Dreamlinux, Kanotix, Knoppix, LinEx, Linspire, Mepis, Sidux, Xandros - and many more!.
