"What is Debian? Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux."

Learning About Major Linux Distributions

It's quite useful to know which Linux distributions are the "major", commonly used, and popular Linux distros. This helps you to understand what's going on in the Linux marketplace - and IT job marketplace!

For example, Red Hat Linux is an extremely expensive Linux distribution, but it's also

very popular.

On the other hand, Fedora Linux is free (and "bleeding edge" and the "test bed" for software features that will be added to future versions of Red Hat Linux).

So, if you're trying to get a job at a company that uses Red Hat Linux, just get Fedora Linux and use it so that you can get Red Hat Linux experience, because these two Linux distros are virtually identical. (The person interviewing you for the job may not understand that the GNU Linux commands, that are common to all Linux distributions, are the best method of Linux System Administration and may think Red Hat Linux is "special" for some reason).

Linux Commands Training Tips: You can easily download Fedora Linux as a Linux ISO file, burn it to a CD and run it as a "live" version without installing it. For any Linux "live" version, you just boot your system with it and the entire Linux OS starts and runs on your system - without having to be installed!

More on Linux "live" versions in an upcoming section.

Learning About Minor Linux Distributions

It's also useful to know the "major" Linux distros, as these are the Linux distributions that have been used to create many other "minor" Linux distributions.

For example, if you already know how to use Debian Linux (a major Linux distro), then you have a really good idea how to use Knoppix (a minor Linux distro that was derived from Debian!).

Many "minor" Linux distributions have been created from the very few "major" Linux distributions.

In other words, there are several "minor" Linux distributions that are "based on" and "derived from" (and created with a "foundation on") a single "major" Linux distribution.

For example, the minor Linux distributions named DEF, GHI and many others are "based on" the major Linux distribution named ABC.

In the example above, replace ABC with any single major Linux distribution name - and replace DEF and GHI with the minor Linux distribution names that have been "derived from" or "based on" the Linux distribution named ABC. You'll see examples of this with "real" of Linux distro names shortly.

And although all of the GNU Linux commands are virtually identical from one Linux distribution to another, the way to run Linux commands as the main System Administrator

(with the user name of "root") is slightly different from one "major" Linux distribution (and its derivatives) to another (and its derivatives).

In other words, you sometimes need to run a Linux command to become the main System Administrator user (named root) to be able to run Linux system administration commands.

And the Linux command that you need to run to work as the root user (System Administrator) may be different from one "major" Linux distro to another.

Linux Commands Training Tips: In order to run Linux system administration commands in one major Linux distribution, you run one command and in order to do the same thing in another major Linux distribution, you run a different (but very similar) command.

Some of the other reasons to know about the major Linux distributions and their derivatives:

they have different Linux installation routines (as do almost all Linux distributions)

they use different (non-GNU) Linux commands for installing Linux software programs

they may use a few different (non-GNU) Linux commands for other tasks

And as you work through this Linux commands training book, you'll see that there are other reasons and benefits to knowing about the "major" Linux distributions and their associated derivatives.

People develop Linux "distribution loyalty" and Linux "distribution brand preference" for many reasons, but some people confuse the Linux distribution name with the Linux distribution software components that they have used and have grown to like.

Here's What Happens with Linux Distribution Names, Branding and Loyalty

People that learn Linux distribution ABC will often think that this is the best Linux distribution, simply because this is the Linux distro that

they know and know how to use - even thought the same software component that they really like, such as a Linux desktop, is also included in LOTS of other Linux distributions.

Some Linux distributions, especially the "major" (expensive and heavily branded) Linux distributions, want you to believe their distribution is the best and sometimes for reasons that don't make the Linux distribution any different from any other Linux distribution!

And this helps them to differentiate themselves from other Linux distributions that have essentially the same Linux distribution software components!

Linux Commands Training Tips: The GNU Linux commands are virtually identical from one Linux distribution to another. And the GNU Linux commands are a fast, effective and efficient method of administering ANY and ALL Linux distributions.

But Linux GUI utilities are usually completely different from one Linux distribution to another.

Some Linux distributions try to differentiate themselves from the rest of the "Linux pack" by focusing on Linux GUI utilities (and other "proprietary" software components - that are not really Linux software components) in their Linux training classes, so that you well become "locked in"' to using their Linux distribution only. Beware!

For example, at times you will see ABC, DEF and GHI used for Linux distribution names, rather than real Linux distribution names. You can usually replace ABC, DEF and GHI with any one of the over 130 Linux distribution names.

Don't Confuse Linux Distribution Software with a Linux Distribution Name

It's true that a few Linux software components in a Linux distribution may have been created by a Linux distribution (name). The percentage of any given Linux distribution software that has been created by a specific Linux distribution (name) is incredibly small in comparison to

However, many people completely associate a Linux distribution (name or brand name) with Linux distribution software components - that the Linux distribution had nothing to do with creating!

And this, of course is what many Linux distributions, especially the "big" brand name (and usually extremely expensive) Linux distributions want you to think!

They want you to believe that they created the Linux software components in the Linux distribution as well as assembling the Linux distribution software components and making them work.

For example, some people are convinced that the Linux distro named ABC is the best Linux distribution in the universe for some reason, such as the Linux web server included with the Linux distribution - or the Linux file server included - or some other Linux server that is part of the Linux distribution.

While other people think distro DEF is the best Linux distribution because it has the most user-friendly desktop.

And still others think distro GHI is by far and away the best because of some other Linux distribution software component - that wasn't created by the Linux distribution - it was created by a group of people working on a Linux software project!
