Important Linux Distro Points to Note - Don't Learn "Other" Linux Commands Unless Necessary
"Other" Software Components In Linux Distributions - Linux Commands That Are Not GNU Commands
In the list of Linux software components above, notice that the GNU (Linux) Commands are common to ALL Linux distributions.
This means that when you learn how to use the GNU (Linux) commands, that you have learned how to work in ALL Linux distributions - not just a single popular or "major" Linux distro.
Linux Commands Training Tips: You are seeing "GNU (Linux)" here - with "(Linux)" in brackets at the right of "GNU" to show the link between the "GNU commands" and "Linux commands". Some Linux documentation shows this as "GNU / Linux" rather than "GNU (Linux)".
Most people simply consider the "GNU commands"
(created by the GNU project - and common to ALL Linux distributions) to be "Linux commands". (The GNU project and GNU Commands used "in Linux" were described in detail earlier).
Well, the "GNU commands" are commonly referred to as just "Linux commands" instead of "GNU (Linux)" or "GNU / Linux" - but there are also Linux commands that are NOT part of the "GNU Linux set of commands". There are proprietary Linux commands that only work on a SINGLE Linux distribution.
In this Linux training book, we are focusing on the GNU commands ONLY because the GNU (Linux) "set" of Linux commands is common to ALL Linux distributions.
So, in addition to the GNU (Linux) commands, many "minor" (specialized and not as popular) Linux distributions, and most "major" (generic and very popular) Linux distributions also have their own "other" Linux commands - that are "proprietary" and specific that that Linux distribution ONLY.
Linux Commands Training Tips: It is important to focus on learning the GNU (Linux) commands. These are the Linux commands that are common to ALL Linux distributions.
And here's the Linux Training benefit: Lots of Linux distros come and go - and even the ones that are very popular now, may not be very popular in a year from now. Learning the GNU "set" of Linux commands will allow you to work in ANY Linux distribution!
Very Important Linux Training Concept: Over the span of your IT career, you will likely be required to work with lots of different Linux distros. When you learn the GNU "set" of Linux commands you will be able to work with Linux anywhere - in ANY company or organization using ANY Linux distribution! This will stop the restriction of you just working in one Linux distro and just for some companies or organizations.
For example, you may learn how to use one Linux distro and then move to a different company that uses a different Linux distro - or the company you are working with changes from one Linux distro to another.
