Linux Training Needs Have Grown Dramatically as the Popularity of Linux Has Skyrocketed
On the Internet, and in organizations all over the world, there are millions of Linux server systems and millions of Linux desktop / workstation systems being used for everything from web servers and email servers - to desktop systems being used to run thousands of different Linux software programs.
Linux Server Systems - Used on the Internet and In Organizations - By the Millions
Linux server systems have the Linux operating system (a.k.a. OS) installed on them - as well as Linux server
software - and these systems are used to run some type of Linux server software "on top of" the Linux OS.
For example, a Linux web server has the Linux OS installed on it and the OS is the "foundation" used - to run the Linux web server software "on top of" the Linux OS. This is very commonly done to run the very popular Apache web server. The Linux OS boots and runs and then it automatically runs the Apache web server software (on top of the OS).
It has been estimated that 80% of the web servers in the world are running on the Linux operating system and these Linux systems are either using the Apache web server or some other Linux web server software.
Note: You've used an Apache web server to access web pages thousands of times!
In addition, here are some of the other types of Linux servers that are being used:
- Linux file servers (Samba servers) are being used to provide users with program and data files
- Linux print servers (CUPS servers) provide access to local and network printers
- Linux FTP servers (a.k.a. file transfer protocol servers) are used to transfer programs and data
- Linux email servers deliver millions of email messages every day
- Linux DNS servers (a.k.a. domain name servers) translate domain names to IP addresses
and there are lots of other types of Linux servers being used for other tasks
IMPORTANT NOTE: Linux commands are used to do Linux system administration and manage all of these millions of Linux servers!
