Linux Distributions - Linux Software Components That Must Work Together - Linux OS Training

The Linux distribution software components below have been developed (and continue to be developed) by Linus Torvalds and hundreds other Linux software developers working in many, many different open source software projects.

List of the main Linux software components that are put together to create a Linux distribution:

Linux OS Kernel - the foundation or "core" of a Linux system

GNU Commands - common to ALL Linux distros and allow you to do Linux System Administration

Linux Server Software Programs - email, web, ftp, dhcp, dns and many more servers!

Linux Desktops - including the X Window System, a window manager and KDE, GNOME, or "Other"

Linux Application Software Programs - including Open Office Suite (Writer, Draw, Calc, Impress, Base) - and thousands of other free open source software (FOSS) programs that work "in Linux"

Important Linux Distro Points to Note - Why Some Linux Distros Work and Others Don't

All Linux Distro Software Components Must Be Made To Work Together

There are lots of different Linux software components in the "main Linux distribution software components list" above and all of these different software components - from lots and lots of different Linux projects - must be "put together" to make a Linux distribution - and all these different Linux distribution software components must be made to "work together" - without a huge amount of frustration and a huge amount time wasted trying to get them to work together!

And this is one of the main things that makes one Linux distro popular and another one not worth wasting your time on!

Some Linux distros (and the hundreds of Linux software programs in them) work well and easily - and some don't!

Linux Commands Training Tips: Beware of Linux distributions, even some of the very popular ones, that simply "don't work". Some Linux distributions take a tremendous amount of time and effort just to get the very "basics" working.
