Linux Distributions - Main Linux OS Distro Characteristics - Linux OS Training CDs

Here are some of the key characteristics that you should look for - and what you will typically find - in a

"major" (popular and common) Linux distributions:

A Comprehensive and Easy-To-Use Installation Routine

An installation routine is a software program that is run to install software on the hard disk(s) in a computer system.

For the Linux OS installation routine, we're talking about the installation of the Linux OS (the kernel), the GNU commands, and the "other" Linux software components you require, such as: one or more Linux desktops, server software, application software, utility software and other software components.

Once an installation routine has been started, it requests information about the hardware components on the system and what software components you need installed on the system.

After requesting this information, the installation routine automatically installs the OS on the hard disk of your system, as per your specifications.

The installation routine copies the software components you require from CD, DVD or another source (such as another computer), onto the hard disk(s) in the system.

The installation routine also configures the Linux software components so that they will work with your hardware components and also work with the other Linux OS components being installed.

The Linux installation routine allows you to specify lots of different Linux OS settings, including the settings for:

hard disk space usage (disk partition settings)

networking (IP address and gateway settings)

hardware components attached to your system

software components that should be installed

- such as: desktops, application software, and utility software

All "major" (popular and common) Linux distributions have installation routines, although some work much better than others. The "ease-of-use" and "intuitiveness" of an installation routine is one of the key “selling points" of a Linux distribution.
