Linux Distributions - Main Linux OS Software Components - Linux OS Training
The Linux OS components were developed by Linus Torvalds, and the Linux software developers that work with him, and hundreds of other software developers - creating the Linux software components found in the over 130 different Linux distributions.
These Linux software components are combined to provide everything that is required for
a “complete” version of the Linux operating system, known as a Linux “distribution”.
The main software components of a Linux distribution are described below and all of these Linux software components are commonly referred to as "the Linux operating system".
Here are the general components that are "combined" and made to work together to form a Linux distribution:
Linux OS Kernel - the "core" of a Linux system
GNU Commands - that allow you to do Linux system administration
Linux Server Software Programs - web, email, ftp, dns, dhcp and lots more!
Linux Desktops - including the X Window System, a window manager and GNOME, KDE or "Other"
Linux Application Software Programs - the Open Office Suite and thousands of others
Linux Commands Training Tips: A Linux server system may - or may not - have desktop software components installed (X Window System, window manager desktop and applications). And a Linux desktop system may - or may not - have server software installed.
Major Linux distributions are available via download, on CD, or on DVD.
And when you get a "major" (popular and common) Linux distribution, it will include at least one Linux desktop and lots (and lots) of server software.
The software that is available on a Linux system is dependent on the software components installed on the system.
The software that is available when a server system is running - or that is available when a desktop system is running - is dependent on the software that is selected to be installed when the distro is installed on the system.
Over the next several sections, we're going to talk about what you should look for - and what you will typically find - in a Linux distribution.
