One or More Linux Desktops - For A Point-And-Click GUI Environment

All "major" (popular and common) Linux distros include at least one Linux desktop - and some include two or more!

A Linux desktop provides a mouse-driven “point-and-click”, environment. It gives you a graphical interface that looks like you're working on a desktop.

You use this “point-and-click” GUI interface to easily do common tasks like

run software programs and manage your data files.

Two of the most popular and commonly available desktops in a Linux distribution are the GNOME desktop (pronounced "nome" - as in "garden gnome") and the KDE desktop.

As with other Linux software components, the Linux desktops are created as "projects" by one or more people working together.

You can learn more about the GNOME desktop project at: http://www.gnome.org

And learn about the KDE desktop project at: http://www.kde.org

Linux Commands Training Tips: You may be wondering which desktop is best to use. The overall general functionality Linux desktops is about the same; so the one to use is almost entirely a matter of personal preference. It's really a matter of which desktop "look and feel" you like best.

So, it's best to try out the popular ones, GNOME and KDE, and then decide which one you'd like to use. Try getting Linux "live" CDs / DVDs to try out the GNOME and KDE desktops.

You can see a listing, and get the specifications of over 300 Linux "live" CDs and DVDs here:

Using Linux Desktops - When More Than One Is Installed On A System

You can install more than one desktop (on the hard disk) in a Linux system, but only use one Linux desktop at a time.

For some Linux distros, you can install more than one Linux desktop and then after the system has booted, you can select the desktop you want to use.

For example, you boot the system and the distro starts - and then a menu appears that allows you to choose the GNOME desktop or the KDE desktop. After you have made your selection, the desktop you selected appears on the screen.
