Linux OS Distro Characteristics - Free Linux Software Documentation (Manuals) - Linux Training CDs
Although there is plenty of free (and not usually very good) documentation available for Linux on the Internet, a Linux distribution must also
provide documentation that is: easy to read, easy to use, and that is specific to the distribution itself.
This Linux distribution documentation must provide complete details for the use of:
The Installation Routine Used To Install The Linux Distribution
Each major Linux distro has it's own GUI "point-and-click" installation routine - and it may also have a "text-based" (not "point-and-click") installation routine.
So, a Linux distribution should include documentation that details the installation routine steps.
Linux Commands Training Tips: The GUI installation routines of all Linux distros do the same basic steps, but these installation routines are NOT at all the same!
For example, the steps to specify the disk partition sizes in the GUI installation routine for one distro will almost certainly be completely different in another distribution. This makes installing and working with multiple distros overly complex.
However, once you've installed a few Linux distros, you'll be able to more easily figure out how to install others.
The Default Desktop Installed With The Linux Distribution - Usually GNOME Or KDE
Linux server systems may have a desktop installed and Linux desktop systems definitely have a Linux desktop installed, such as the GNOME or KDE desktop.
Linux desktop systems are used by all "kinds" of Linux users, such as programmers, tech support staff and regular Linux "office productivity" users.
These "office productivity" users are usually not technically inclined and so they need a good quality Linux reference manual that describes how to use the Linux desktop
Linux Application Software Programs Provided With The Linux Distribution
As with a Linux desktop manual, typical Linux "office" users need documentation that easily describes, in complete detail, the steps to use application software programs, like the Open Office Suite of programs (Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw and Base) - and any other application software that a user is often using.
Linux Software Utilities and Other Software Included With The Linux Distribution
The major Linux distributions all install various software utilities, such as a Linux file manager, which is used to copy, move and delete user data files.
They also install "other" important software, such as firewall, routing, server and other software.
The documentation of a Linux distributions should also describe how to use this utility software and other software installed with the distribution.
