The GNU / Linux Commands and the GNU Project - Linux Training Online
In this "Linux Commands Book", you're going to learn all about the "generic" Linux commands that are common to all versions of Linux. These are the GNU / Linux commands created by the GNU Project.
Linux Software Projects - Used to Create Linux Software Programs
Linux software components are created in "projects" and these projects are worked on by one or more people - and sometimes many people. These people work together to
create some kind of Linux software, such as a software program or set of software components, such as the GNU / Linux commands.
The "generic" Linux commands that are common to all Linux distributions are created by GNU project.
These Linux commands are often referred to as the "GNU Linux" commands, or "GNU / Linux" commands (notice the "/" slash between GNU and Linux).
The GNU / Linux commands are the main set of Linux commands that are used to administer and maintain Linux server systems and Linux desktop / workstation systems. They are the most common and popular Linux commands - and they are available and used in ALL Linux distributions.
So, the GNU project created the "generic" Linux commands that are common to ALL Linux versions (a.k.a. distributions, distros).
Sometimes a Linux distribution may have a few Linux commands that are specific to just that single Linux distribution and these are NOT the GNU / Linux commands.
In this "Linux Commands Book", we will be focusing only on the Linux administration commands that are common to ALL Linux distributions. And there are lots of GNU/Linux commands!
These GNU / Linux commands are the "core" Linux commands and they are all that is needed to administer a system - and these are always available on ALL Linux systems.
So it doesn't matter which version or distribution of Linux you're using, the commands you'll learn in this Linux book are the commands that are always available in ALL Linux versions - and they will always work for ALL Linux versions.
