The Linux Operating System and Linus Torvalds - Linux OS Training

The Linux operating system was started in Helsinki, Finland in 1991 by a computer science student named Linus Torvalds.

Linus wanted an operating system that was like the UNIX operating system (he wanted an OS like Minix, which is "UNIX-like"), but he didn’t have the money to buy it. So he decided to

use UNIX as a model for developing a new operating system - named Linux!

Using UNIX as a model for his operating system proved to be an excellent idea. UNIX is a well-designed and thoroughly tested operating system that is used by millions of people around the world. Linus had the opportunity to use this example of an existing OS, to build his own OS from the ground up.

Linus designed the Linux kernel so that it would work on his IBM PC compatible computer. The kernel is the “core” or main component of the operating system. His intention was to create an operating system with the same functionality as the UNIX operating system (to be POSIX-like), and it worked! Linux is named after Linus, by using a combination of the words Linus and UNIX. It is pronounced something like "lynn-nux".

Linux Training Tips: The “ux” in Linux leads to the word “tux”. And penguins appear (to some) to be wearing tuxedos. Therefore, Linus selected a penguin named Tux to become the official “mascot” of the Linux operating system. Apparently Linus is quite fond of penguins. I wonder if he knows Opus (the penguin) from Bloom County?

So, Linus (pronounced lee-nus - not lie-nus) is the founder of Linux, which is like UNIX and both OSes are POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for uniX) compatible.
