The Linux Operating System (OS) and the Windows OS - A Linux OS Introduction
Linux is a powerful and popular operating system (OS), like Windows - but much better!
The Linux OS Software, Windows OS Software and "Other" Software
Think of there being two general types of software: operating system software and "other" software.
The "other" software consists of several types of software programs, including: application software programs, utility software programs and server software programs.
After you boot a computer system with an operating system, all of the
"other" software runs "on top of" the operating system.
You boot a desktop / workstation computer system with operating system software so you can run application software programs, like a word processor, spreadsheet, email, and browser.
You boot a server computer system so you can run one (or more) of many different types of server software programs, like a web server, file server, and email server.
There are also lots of different "utility" software programs that an OS lets you run like: calendar, calculator, sound recorder and hard disk management.

Windows and Linux Operating System (OS) Functionality
When you boot a computer with an OS, like the Windows OS or Linux OS, the OS allows you to do tasks like:
- run application software programs, like a word processor, spreadsheet or email program
- save data files to your hard disk, like a letter, memo or report
- retrieve data files so you can edit them
- send data files to print
- and an OS provides lots of other services to your computer system
