The Linux OS License - Selected By Linus For Linux - Linux OS Training

Copyright is used to protect the author of a creative work, such as a software program, from the illegal reproduction of the work. This is intended to prevent anyone from stealing the work from the author and allows the author to control the sale and use of the work. The author of a software program can be one or more individuals, a company or an organization. The person(s), company or organization that holds the copyright, controls

who has the “right” to “copy” the work that is protected under copyright.

For computer software, copyright is protected by licenses. A software license is used to describe who can use a software program and how it can be used.

Most "commercial software" is licensed to the user, for use (not ownership) of the software. With this type of (very common) software license, you don't actually own the software, like Microsoft Windows or the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and so on).

When a program is "under copyright", the author is protected from unauthorized reproduction of their program - by the copyright law.

The Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project - Revisited

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is dedicated to eliminating the restrictions on copying, redistribution, understanding, and modification of computer programs. The FSF was founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by Richard Stallman in 1983. He and other members of the FSF presented the concept that companies could charge for software services and software customization, but that the software itself should not be restricted by a standard "commercial software" copyright license.

The FSF is the governing body of the GNU Project, under which hundreds of software utilities, including the GNU Linux commands, have been created and distributed for free around the world.

The GNU commands are combined with the Linux kernel to create GNU / Linux - which most people simply call "Linux".
