Why GNU Linux Commands Are The Best Method Of Doing Linux System Administration
Generally speaking, there are three ways of doing Linux system administration tasks on a Linux system, such as when you're working on a Linux server or desktop system.
You can: use GNU Linux commands, use commands specific to a Linux distro (version) or use a
Linux GUI utility (which is also specific to a Linux distro).
Using The GNU / Linux Commands That Are Common To All Linux Distributions
The GNU / Linux commands are the most popular "set" (or group) of Linux commands - and they are common to all Linux distributions.
Linux Training Tips: Linux distros (a.k.a. versions, distributions) are rising and falling in popularity all the time.
Learning anything specific to just one Linux distro is a HUGE waste of time.
By learning the GNU Linux "set" of commands, you are learning the Linux commands that are common to ALL Linux distros.
Doing Linux System Administration Tasks with Linux Commands that are Specific to a Linux Distribution
Most of the major (and very popular) Linux distributions all have several commands that are specific to that single distribution. In other words, for each of these popular Linux distributions, there are some Linux commands that can only be used on just that single distribution. These are NOT the GNU Linux commands.
For example, a Linux distribution will likely have a command that is used to manage Linux partitions (disk space) and this command only works on one distribution.
However, the GNU / Linux fdisk command is used to manage the partitions on the hard disk(s) in a Linux system and this command exists on all Linux distributions.
The fdisk command is available in every Linux distro, and it's relatively easy to use.
Learning how to use the GNU / Linux fdisk command is much better than trying to learn a command that only works in one distro - or learning a GUI utility that only works on one distro.
So, rather than learn a command that is specific to a single Linux distribution, learn the GNU / Linux commands because these commands are common to all Linux distributions.
